Ever since its inception, the only way for users to monetize on Twitter has been through branded collaborations. However, the deals were struck off-platform. The number of followers and their engagement did not make a difference. There was no way for users to directly reward content that resonated with them.
To tackle this issue, the platform has recently launched ‘Twitter Tips’, a feature that allows users to make direct donations to pages or individuals that they regularly follow, adding to the several other new Twitter features launched in the last year.
How does Twitter Tips work?
The users can turn Twitter Tips on through the ‘Edit profile’ section on the app. The platform explains how the feature can allow direct transfer of money through online wallets such as Paypal. ‘Twitter Tips’ is currently only available on the smartphone app.
Apart from money, the users can also tip using the cryptocurrencies ‘Bitcoin’ and ‘Ethereum’. Once the user turns on the feature, a cash sign appears next to the bell icon.
The followers are able to choose how they want to pay after clicking on the sign.
How can Twitter Tips help journalists?
Twitter describes the option as a way for users to “show support, show appreciation, help out or reward anyone you want – from emerging creators and journalists to Twitter Spaces hosts and more.”
This feature will help content creators in increasing quality through direct support from their fans.
Twitter is not alone in testing out new monetisation features. Instagram also announced that it was testing a subscription feature to help creators in monetisation.
