Instagram rolls out desktop posting

Instagram has finally allowed desktop posting after an encouraging trial with users over summer 2021, reported TechCrunch. In true Instagram fashion, the feature was rolled out slowly but is now available to all users as of late October.

The desktop option is limited to photos and videos under one minute. Stories, longer videos, reels, and live-streaming are not supported. The new way to upload content is thus limited to “feed” posts only, potentially missing out on the most engaging aspects of the app.

The simple update comes more than a decade after the creation of Instagram, which celebrated its 10-year anniversary last year. Since then, social media has become a full-time job for many — leading to the birth of various tools to make content management a seamless process.

Brands, publications, and influencers have long relied on third-party, oftentimes paid, desktop apps to make Instagram posting more office/desktop-friendly. At the moment, Instagram’s desktop posting is not likely to threaten existing social media flows and strategies. Its holding company, Meta, however, is known for eradicating competitors. It won’t be a surprise if we see Instagram desktop replacing tools like Later and Hootsuite in the near future.
