Victims of paedophilia and sexual abuse on Omegle have recounted their experiences, following the website’s closure last week.
The platform, which would randomly pair you with another user for live video chats, was shut down on 9 November. Visiting the site now takes you to a letter from owner Leif Brooks, addressed ‘Dear Strangers’. Here, Brooks details the enormous weight Omegle placed on his conscience, saying it was no longer “psychologically sustainable”.
Highlighting a “malicious subset of users”, Brooks eludes to the vast internet subculture that used Omegle as a platform for sexual abuse and paedophilia. Predators would coerce women into flashing them, then screenshot and post the images on 4chan threads. Here, the “malicious subset” would grow ever larger.
Leonard*, who used the platform with friends in his late teens, recalled an edited video used by abusers to blackmail women into flashing them. The video showed a chick with a giant snake behind it, and a handwritten sign demanding the victim show their breasts or they would move the snake closer. If they didn’t comply, then the snake would eat the chick.
Lyra*, aged 14 at the time, encountered a man with a giant pair of scissors held to his phallus who threatened to chop it off. “It was disgusting and traumatising… I still think about it now, four or five years later,” she said.
As these stories show, abuse was rife on Omegle – and closing it down is a step in the right direction for internet safety.
