Mobile apps for editing content are plentiful, and it can be hard to narrow down what you really need. A lot of the time you download one off the app store that looks great, then you open it up and lo and behold – there’s a paywall or membership scheme. We’ve narrowed it down for you. Here are five free mobile apps that can cover all your needs when it comes to making content for your social media platforms.
Snapseed
Snapseed is a great image editor. Most phones will have a built-in image editor, allowing you to finetune your image from your own camera roll. But if you’re looking for something more specific, then I definitely recommend Snapseed. It has most of the essential features you’ll need when editing a photo.
Background Eraser
Any similar app would work fine, but I’ve been using Eraser for years and it’s my go-to when I need to make transparent PNGs. You can finetune the image before and after erasing parts of the layer. The eraser tool itself is easy to use and lets you target specific areas and colours for a quicker and more precise job.

Phonto
Phonto is the app that brings it all together. You can add various layers while editing, such as text, shapes and images. And each of these layers can be customised with precision. One of my favourite things about Phonto is how it lets you tweak even the smallest details – from line spacing and text background width to the opacity and blurriness of a shadow.
Quik
As its name suggests, Quik gets the job done fast. Quik is a simple and speedy way to create social videos. It has a range of templates and themes that are ready to use and suitable for any occasion. You can add text, music, transitions and more. The app automatically adds watermark at the end of the video once you’ve exported it, but there is an option to disable this feature – and it’s free.
Canva Stories
Most social platforms have some kind of “story” function, and even LinkedIn is jumping onboard the stories train. Now with editing stories, it can be encouraged to use the native tools for a more organic and personal feel. But for the occasions where you need to get more creative, Canva Stories is a great option. There are other mobile apps for stories, like Unfold and Made, but most of their features can only be accessed behind a paywall. Canva Stories has a range of free templates and features to use to suit any content.
