Upcoming journalism events you need to know about (Feb – April)

February 20th: BBC Virtual Reality Screening – Damming the NileEvent: Damming the Nile, BBC, Frontline Club

Hosted by the Frontline Club, this free event celebrates the launch of a new BBC VR documentary. Viewers will travel down the Nile with the BBC Africa team and explore the geopolitical struggles facing the region. Headsets will be provided.

BBC Africa correspondent, Alastair Leithead, will answer questions afterwards and Zillah Watson, executive producer and head of BBC’s VR Hub, and James Montgomery, digital development director for BBC News, will discuss the potential of VR in news reporting.

February 21st: Hack/Hackers London

Hack/Hackers London is back for its first meet-up of the year, once again at Twitter London. The event brings together journalists (hacks) and technology experts (hackers) to share new ideas and tech.

Speakers this month include Blaine Cook from Conde Nast Tech, Andy Webb, the VP of product strategy at BBC Worldwide, and Martin Burch, graphics editor at The Wall Street Journal.

Free tickets were in hot demand and have now sold out, but you can still pick up a supporter ticket for £6. Hurry before they sell out!

March 7th: What Can We Do To Tackle Sexual Harassment in the Media?

While not strictly a data/digital journalism event, this panel talk will discuss sexual harassment within media outlets and how best to tackle the problem.

The event is hosted by The Second Source in collaboration with the Frontline Club. The panel will be chaired by Eleanor Mills, editorial director of The Sunday Times.

It’s sure to be a fascinating and thought-provoking evening, with journos including Mark Di Stefano, Jasmine Andersson, Louise Ridley and Rachel Corp speaking.

March 8th: Virtual Future: How virtual reality will shape our worldVirtual Reality talk visual

This panel-talk will explore how virtual reality will shape our world in both the short and long term. Speakers include Anetta Jones, Virtual Reality Producer at the Guardian, and Salmen, CEO of WeEvolve – an online platform to allow anyone to create virtual reality experiences in just a few clicks.

April 20th: Apostles of Certainty: Data Journalism and the Politics of Doubt

Apostles of Certainty: Data Journalism and the Politics of Doubt, 20th April

C.W. Anderson from the University of Leeds will be at KCL to discuss his new book on data journalism at this free event in April. The evening will address questions such as where data journalism comes from and how the history of data in journalism is relevant to practices today.
